Abstract

PURPOSE:To surely measure a difference between a regular reflection signal and an irregular reflection signal even if a road surface is similar to a mirror surface due to its wet state or the like and to improve the decision accuracy of a road surface state by arranging an irregular reflection receiving part on the opposite side to a regular reflection receiving part with respect to a light source. CONSTITUTION:Light flux 9 from the light source 2 in a housing 1 is reflected on a detecting position 7 on a road surface, the regularly reflected flux 10 is made incident upon the regular reflection receiving part 3 and irregularly reflected beams 11 are made incident upon the irregular reflection receiving part 4. A processing part 6 amplifies and compares signals obtained from respective receiving parts 3, 4 and outputs a signal. When the road surface is dried or snowed, a difference of received light between regular reflection and irregular reflection is small and the state is discriminated by the size of the difference. In case of wet or frozen state, the difference of receiving light is large, and when a reflective thermome ter 5 indicates <=0 deg.C, the frozen state is discriminated. Since the receiving part 4 is arranged on the opposite side to the receiving part 3 with respect to the light source 2, an angle formed by the light fluxes 10, 11 can be increased, and even if the road surface goes similar to a mirror surface, the discriminating accuracy can be improved by increasing the output difference.
