Abstract

PURPOSE:To secure the detection of the road surface state in the running car, by detecting the ratio between the vertical polarization and the horizontal polarization of the reflected light. CONSTITUTION:The light is projected from the light source, and the light reflected on the road surface is received by detector 12. Then polarizer 11 installed on the reflected light path is turned to extract, for example, the horizontal polarization first and then the vertical polarization each. Accordingly, the output of detector 12 shows the intensity of the horizontal polarization first and then the intensity of the vertical polarization. This intensity is detected through amplitude deciding circuit 16, and then the ratio of the intensity is obtained between both polarizations.
