Abstract

PURPOSE:To contrive application to a highly efficient wear-resistant member, by subjecting a metal (alloy) of group IVb or Vb to heating treatment in the air or in an oxidizing atmosphere and forming an oxygen-enriched layer on the surface. CONSTITUTION:A metal of group IVb, such as Ti, Zr, and Hf, or of group Vb, such as V, Nb, and Ta, or alloy thereof is heated in the air or in an oxidizing atmosphere, such as oxygen air flow, by which an oxygen-enriched layer is formed on the surface. This oxygen-enriched layer is used as a wear-resistant layer. This oxygen-enriched layer has a hardness of about Hv1,000 micro-Vickers hardness. This layer has superior adhesive strength with the metal, so that it can be used under special severe environments.
