Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily produce a reinforcing fiber preform for a metal-base composite material which is not deformed and shrunk at the time of pouring a molten metal by putting reinforcing fibers selected from short fibers and whiskers into a mold and subjecting the fibers to heating and pressurizing simultaneously. CONSTITUTION:The reinforcing fibers (about <=10mm length) selected from the short fibers (alumina, silica-alumina, etc.) and the whiskers (silicon carbide, silicon nitride, etc.) are disposed into the mold after a small amt. of a strength improving agent is added thereto at need. The fibers are then heated and pressurized at about 500-1,500 deg.C under about 5-200kg/cm<2> to mold the reinforcing fiber preform having >=0.5g/cm<2> density and >=10kg/cm<2> bending strength. This reinforcing fiber preform has the high density and bending strength and is, therefore, not deformed and shrunk at the time of pouring the molten metal. The preform is thus adequate for use as the metal-base composite material.
