PURPOSE:To deflect a light beam so that the light intensity of reflected light is flat and has small variation without decreasing the reflection factor by specifying the product of the reflective index and thickness of a protective film provided on a light beam reflecting surface. CONSTITUTION:The protective film 3 is formed by vacuum deposition, etc., on the reflecting surface 2 of a rotary polygon mirror 1 made of Al or Al alloy (e.g., Al-Mg alloy). Then 0.3lambda<nd<0.48lambda, where lambda is the wavelength of a light beam whose deflection direction of incidence on the device is nearly in an S deflection direction and (n) is the refractive index of a material (A) used for the film 3 and <=1.7. Further, 0.8lambda<nd<lambda when a material (B) whose refractive index (n) is >=1.7. Further, the material A uses MgF2 or SiO2 preferably and the material B uses SiO2 or TiO2.
