Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the tilt angle in the chiral smectic phase of a non-spiral structure which realizes at least two stable states and to improve the transmittance when a picture element shutter is open by using a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer where a chiral smectic liquid crystal phase and the phase having the higher order parameter than that of said phase co-exist. CONSTITUTION:The ferroelectric liquid crystal layer in a ferroelectric liquid crystal element is formed of a liquid crystal compsn. contg. liquid crystalline compds. at least at the ratio at which the one component is in a supersaturated state. The peripheral region of the phase of the high order parameter attains a uniform state and the region where the twist arrangement is eliminated and the tilt angle theta is increased in obtd. if the mesomorphic compd. contained at the ratio of the supersaturated state segregates and the phase of the order parameter higher than the order parameter thereof is formed in the chiral smectic phase. The ferroelectric liquid crystal element in which the twist arrangement is eliminated is thereby made into the liquid crystal element having the contrast of the max. transmittance/light shielding rate under crossed nicols.
