Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase recording density and to improve mechanical reliability by providing a surface having the smoothness lower than the smoothness of a data area to a CSS area and forming said surface in such a manner that the peak value of the projecting parts of said surface does not exceed the average value of the gaps between the respective peak values in the rugged parts of the area of the data area. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic film 15 contg. for example, iron oxide, etc., is formed on the surface of a substrate 14. The surface of the magnetic film 15 corresponding to the data area 13 is formed to such high smoothness at which, for example, the max. value of the gap values from the peak to peak of the ruggedness is <=0,01mum. On the other hand, the surface of the magnetic film 15 corresponding to the contact start stop (CSS) area 12 is formed to, for example, about 0.25mum max. value and to the smoothness considerably lower than the smoothness of the data area 13. The peak value of the projecting parts in the CSS area is so set as not to exceed the average value of the gap values in the data area 13. The lower floating of a magnetic head is obtd. at the time of reading/writing in the data area and the higher density recording is enabled; in addition, the mechanical reliability is improved.
