Abstract

PURPOSE:To always monitor the breaking state of a face easily even during excavation, by providing a gamma-ray source and a scintillation detector in the hole part formed to a skin plate in a state separated by a shield body. CONSTITUTION:A radio isotope 11 being a gamma-ray source is mounted in the mount hole 10 bored in the shield body 9 at the center of the small diameter part 1b of the piercing hole 1 provided on the top part of the skin plate 3 of a shield main body 2 and the upper end part of a scintillation probe 8 is engaged with the large diameter part 1a of said piercing hole 1. When gamma-rays are allowed to irradiate outwardly from the isotope 11, a part of gamma-rays are again incident to the Nal(Tl) scintillator 13 of the probe 8 as back scattering rays by the contact with natural ground and the measured value of the energy of the back scattering rays is inputted to a measuring part to be counted as a counting rate and further inputted to an operational processing apparatus to be operated on the basis of a calculation formula preliminarily obtained by experiment to be displayed as face breaking quantity. By this method, the breaking state of the face can be always detected even during the evacuation by a shield excavator.
