Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optical fiber having excellent mechanical strength by forming a mixed layer composed of a core material and sheath material to the joint part of the core material and the sheath material at the thickness of at least 6/10,000 the diameter. CONSTITUTION:This optical fiber is produced by subjecting a monomer such as methyl methacrylate to soln. polymn. or mass polymn. in the completely hermetic state in a manner as to prevent the intrusion of foreign matter therein, then by feeding the polymer to an extruder and forming a core sheath structure by the sheath material in a molten state and special double nozzles. The thickness of the mixed layer is controlled between 6/10,000-20/10,000. The extrusion is executed at 210-300 deg.C die temp. and the respective resins are so selected that the melt index of the core material attains 1-50g/10min and the melt index of the sheath material attains 20-200g/10min at the temp. of the spinning dies for the above-mentioned purpose. The plastic optical fiber having the excellent mechanical characteristics is thereby obtd. without generating disturbance such as exfoliation on the core-sheath joint surface.
