Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent reduction in the amount of effective chromium at a allow cost and to obtain an exhaust system material for engine excellent in durability and economical efficiency, by specifying a composition consisting of Ni, Cr, Si, Mo, Mn, C, and Fe. CONSTITUTION:An exhaust system material for engine has a composition consisting of, by weight, 7-15% Ni, 15-24% Cr, 1-5% Si, 0.3-2.0% Mo, <=2% Mn, <=0.08% C, and the balance Fe at least and trace amounts of rare- earth elements with inevitable impurities and containing, if necessary, one or more elements among Nb, Ta, and Ti. In the above material, Mo which is inexpensive and does not inhibit hot workability is added to an austenitic stainless steel containing trace amounts of rare-earth elements, etc., to prevent reduction in the amount of effective chromium and to economically improve intergranular corrosion resistance. By this method, the inexpensive exhaust system material for engine having required strength at high temp. and excellent in durability can be obtained.
