Abstract

PURPOSE:To correct variation in signal output with the temperature of an optical system, etc., by forming out-of-phase detection patterns on two optical grating plates on a shaft to be measured and outputting two kinds of signals, and calculating the difference from an initial output value. CONSTITUTION:Rotary slits 16 and 18 made of transparent glass plates are fixed on the shaft 10 to be measured and black detection patterns A and B consisting of radial stripes and A' and B' symmetrical with them are formed. The respective patterns of the slits shift in pitch. When the shaft 10 is twisted, the patterns A and B, and A' and B' are displaced relatively and the patterns A and A' and B and B' generate output voltages vA and vB corresponding to the quantities of applied torque. Then the ideal output characteristics of those output voltages are calculated and stored in the memory of a microcomputer. Then the outputs of waveforms vA and vB which vary momentarily are monitored at the current point and the current output values are corrected according to variations of the maximum and minimum value between the initial output value and current output value to find vA' and vB', thereby finding the torque from them.
