Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent toner from scattering upstream in the moving direction of the surface of an electrostatic latent image carrier by simple constitution by switching a seal member between a position where its tip contacts the surface of the electrostatic latent image carrier and a noncontact position by the same driving source with an operation-nonoperation switching means for a developing device. CONSTITUTION:Insulating seal members 54 and 64 are provided on the upstream sides of the development areas of developing devices 5 and 6 on the downstream sides of a developing device 4 positioned on the most upstream side in the moving direction of the surface of the electrostatic latent image carrier 1 so that they can be switched between the positions where their tips contact the surface of the electrostatic latent image carrier 1 and noncontact positions. Single driving sources 53 and 63 serve as both operation-nonoperation switching means for the developing devices 5 and 6 and switching means for the positions of the seal members 54 and 64. Then the selected developing device 5 switches the seal member 54 to its contact position while entering an operation state to prevent powder toner from scattering upstream. The developing device 6 which is not selected, on the other hand, switches the seal member 64 to its noncontact position while entering a nonoperation state. Consequently, the toner is prevented from scattering upstream.
