Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an easily sinterable silicon nitride powder, which enables low-temperature sintering in the normal pressure, by kneading a metallic silicon powder, Mg2SiO4 powder, ZrO2 powder and a forming binder, forming the mixture and nitriding with heat before pulverization. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. of a metallic silicon powder are kneaded with 2-21pts.wt. of forsterite (Mg2SiO4) powder and 1-18pts.wt. of zirconium oxide (ZrO2), as well as a molding binder. The kneaded composition is formed, dried, converted into nitride by heating at 1,000-1,500 deg.C in a nitrogen or ammonia powder, and crushed into a powder. The product is a silicon nitride powder consisting of Mg: 0.4-3.4wt.%, Zr: 0.4-7wt.%, N: 31-38wt.%, O: 3-9wt.% and small amounts of elements as unavoidable contaminants. If the contamination can be controlled less than 0.5wt.% of Al, less than 0.3wt.% of Fe, Ca, and less than 0.2wt.% of C, the silicon nitride powder can keep its good sintering properties and the physical properties of the sintered products.
