Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the external appearance of the reader and to miniaturize it, by using a read direction conversion means so as to turn the read direction of the read means and to read the original by a prescribed angle depending whether the original is set onto a read face or the original is supplied automatically. CONSTITUTION:When a sensor 16a detects an original 1a, a sensor moving mechanism 21a moves a round image sensor 40b toward the arrow A to read original 1a. When the sensor 17a detects the original 1a, a motor 18b drives the round image sensor 40b by 180 deg. and the read direction is directed downward. Then the originals 1a are supplied one by one by the automatic supply mechanism ADF 14a and are read while passing under the round image sensor 40b in standstill at the home position. Thus, the automatic supply section of the original 1a is provided under the read face 10a and no projection exists above the read face 10a, then the external appearance of the reader is improved and the reader is miniaturized.
