Abstract

PURPOSE:To find out path to the final character and to improve a recognition rate by calculating a mininum distance between a reference pattern of each group in a dictionary having a tree structure obtained by grouping each presage by means of similar reference patterns and an unknown character. CONSTITUTION:A feature value e.g. of an unknown character is inputted to a recognition control part 2. In each stage of plural stages obtained by grouping each prestage by means of similar reference patterns along the tree structure of the dictionary 1, the minimum distance between the reference pattern of each group and the unknown character is found out. While forming a path connecting the group giving the minimum distance, descending retrieval is executed and a recognized result obtained on the final stage is outputted as a recognized character.
