Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower the loss of a plastic optical fiber which is constituted of a fiber and sleeve respectively consisting of a synthetic high-polymer compd. and which is lower in the refractive index of the sleeve material than the refractive index of the fiber material by forming the fiber of a polymer having a specific degree of dispersion. CONSTITUTION:This plastic optical fiber is constituted of the fiber 1 and sheath 2 respectively consisting of the synthetic high-polymer compd. and is lower in the refractive index of the sheath material than the refractive index of the fiber material. The fiber 1 of such plastic optical fiber is formed of the polymer having <=1.8 degree of dispersion expressed by the ratio of a weight average mol.wt. and number average mol.wt. For example, polymers essentially consisting of polymers such as methyl methacrylate, styrene, fluors-chlorinated styrene, etc., or copolymrs of the monomers thereof are all capable of yielding the synthetic high-polymer compd. having <=1.8 degree of dispersion. The light transmission loss of the fiber material 1 is thereby improved from about conventional 0.035-0.040dB/m to <=0.030dB/m.
