Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the strength, thermal shock resistance, and corrosion resistance, etc., of a compsn. for a sintered body by constituting the compsn. of ZrB2 and BN as primary components, adding thereto B4C and metallic Al, to obtain thus a specified compsn. CONSTITUTION:The title ZrB2 compound sintered body consists of 30-65wt.% ZrB2, 20-55wt.% BN, 3-20wt.% B4C, and 1-15wt.% metallic Al. The sintered body is obtd. by, for example, hot-pressing a mixture of powdery raw materials such as ZrB2, BN, B4C, and metallic Al filled in a mold comprising graphite, etc., at 1,650-2,100 deg.C under 100-350kgf/cm<2> for 0.5-3hr in nonoxidizing atmosphere such as Ar. Thus, the sinterability of the mixture is improved remarkably and the tissue of the sintered product becomes more compact, so a sintered body having high strength, high thermal shock resistance, and high corrosion resistance, is obtd. The sinterability of the raw material powder is improved further if B4C and metallic Al are added simultaneously. When said two materials are added separately, sufficient improvement of the sinterability is unattainable, so a sufficiently compact sintered body is not obtd.
