Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the EL luminescence of high brightness corresponding to rare earth elements and enable the practical application of multi-color membrane EL elements other than yellow orange by specifying a concentration ratio of a rare earth atom to a fluorine atom in a luminescent layer. CONSTITUTION:The concentration ratio (F/RE) of a rare earth atom (RE) and a fluorine atom (F) in a luminescent layer formed with sputtering is set within a range of 0<F/RE<0.5. TbF3, though effective for all rare earth fluorides, is used as a main luminescent material. In this case, when Ar and H2 gases are used for sputtering and a luminescent layer is formed, a ratio of F to Tb in the layer is controlled to be within a range of 0<F/Tb<0.5, thereby enabling the embodiment of a membrane EL element of high brightness. The aforesaid system is also effective for other rare earth fluorides such as PrF3, SmF3 and TmF3 in addition to TbF3.
