Abstract

PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for magnetic field impressing device and to reduce the size and energy of an information recording and reproducing device by using a material which can be changed in phases and is different in magneto- optic effect with the respective phases as a recording layer. CONSTITUTION:A protective layer 2, the recording layer 3, a protective layer 4 and a protective layer 5 are formed in this order on a substrate 1. The recording layer 3 is formed of the material which can attain the two different phases, can be changed in the phases between said phases by irradiation of a light beam and is changed in magnetic properties by the phase states thereof. Information is recorded and erased by projecting the light beam to this recording layer so as to generate the phase change in the part irradiated with the light. Reproduction of the information is executed in accordance with the difference in the magneto-optic effect between the recorded part and non-recorded part of the information by projecting the light beam to the recording layer where the information is recorded. Since the information is reproduced by detecting the difference in the magneto-optic effect of the different phases in such a manner, the need for external magnetic fields is eliminated.
