Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce a brake disk material for vehicles having excellent friction performance, strength and thermal damage resistance by subjecting a pearlite- base flake graphite cast iron having a specific compsn. consisting of C, Si, Mn, P, S, and Fe to a specific heat treatment. CONSTITUTION:The base material of the pearlite-base flake graphite cast iron consisting of 2.8-3.7wt.% C, 1.3-2.2% Si, 0.2-1.0% Mn, <=0.2% P, <=0.1% S, and the balance Fe is cast after smelting. This cast iron is treated for 60-90min at 1,143-1,193K temp. and is thereby austenitized. This treated material is then subjected to an austemper treatment for 60-90min at 573-648K temp. and is air cooled, by which the austemper-treated bainite-base flake graphite cast iron is obtd. This cast iron structure is thereby made into the structure constituted by providing the state of distributing much of the A-shaped flake graphite of slightly larger sizes to the base in which slight residual austenite is made to co-exist in the acicular lower bainite. The high-performance and low-cost cast iron brake disk material for vehicles is thus obtd.
