Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a silicon nitride sintered compact having excellent flexural strength at high temperature and oxidation resistance, by constituting the sintered compact having a specific beta-Si3N4, Sc and Yb or Dy, content of excess oxygen and grain boundary phase of beta-Si3N4. CONSTITUTION:A silicon nitride sintered compact containing 85-99mol.% beta-Si3N4, 1-5mol.% [calculated in terms of oxide (M2O3)] compound of at least one kind of element (M) in Sc, Yb, Ho and Dy and excess oxygen (O), having <=0.8 [excess oxygen mol. number (calculated in terms of SiO2)/M2O3 mol. number], main crystalline phase of beta-Si3N4 grain boundary phase being melilite, >=50kg/mm<2> high-temperature flexural strength (flexural strength at 1,400 deg.C and 4 points) and <=0.5mg/cm<2> middle-temperature oxidation increasing amount (1,000 deg.CX100hr). Control of excess oxygen amount in sintered compact is carried out by set of firing state and crystal of melilite is preferentially produced by setting excess oxygen amount within the above-mentioned range.
