Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce the titled sintered body superior in resistance to oxidation and high temp. characteristics, and available for a gas turbine, etc. by mixing beta-Si3N4 and oxide, etc. of Y, etc., and sintering the mixture to grow mainly an apatite crystal at a grain boundary phase and to develop a definite strength, etc. CONSTITUTION:Both of alpha- or beta-Si3N4 powder of >=10m<2>/g BET specific surface area and <=3wt.% O2 content and of the metallic compd(s) selected from the group of Sc, Yb, Er, Ho, and Dy are mixed to have the compsn. of 85-99mol.% beta-Si3N4 and 1-5mol.% metallic compd(s) reduced to the oxide forms in the sintered body, and fired at 1,600-2,300 deg.C in the N2-contg. nonoxidizing atmo sphere. Then, the fired body is cooled at a desired rate of cooling to obtain the Si3N4 sintered body, in which the mol. ratio of the excess oxygen content expressed in terms of SiO2/ the aboe-mentioned metallic oxide (M2O3) is >=0.8, the main crystal in the Si3N4 grain boundary phase being the apatite or disilicate, the high temp. flexural strength (1,400<=, the four-point bending strength) being >=40kg/mm<2>, the wt. increase due to the oxidation at a moderate temp. being <=0.1mg/cm<2>.
