Abstract

PURPOSE:To join ceramics to a metal with superior bonding strength by alternately arranging layers of a specified composite material having a coef. of thermal expansion between the coef. of thermal expansion of the ceramics and that of the metal and layers of a porous material having high deformability and a low modulus of elasticity between the ceramics and the metal before joining. CONSTITUTION:When ceramics 1 such as Si3N4, SiC, Al2O3 or ZrO2 is joined to a metal 2 such as steel, two or more layers of a composite material A1-An having a coefft. of thermal expansion between the coefft. of thermal expansion of the ceramics 1 and that of the metal 2 and two or more layers of a porous material B1-Bn having high deformability and a low modulus of elasticity are alternately arranged between the ceramics 1 and the metal 2. The composite material A1-An may be WC-CO or SiC-Ni and the coefft. of thermal expansion of the material is gradually changed from the ceramics 1 side toward the metal 2 side by changing the ratio of the ceramics to the metal or that of the dispersed metal particles to the matrix metal. The porous material B1-Bn is preferably kept in the same state. A brazing filler metal for joining is then interposed between the layers and joining is carried out.
