Abstract

PURPOSE:To discriminate many scintillators by a reduced number of photomultiplier tubes and to reduce manufacturing cost, by dividing the light emitting surface of a scintillator into a large number of square regions and arranging said regions so as to incline them with respect to the line or row of the scintillator. CONSTITUTION:The light emitting surfaces of thin plate-shaped scintillators 1 are divided into square regions and said regions are inclined by 45 deg. with respect to the line or row of the scintillators 1. Now, when beams are emitted from the scintillators 1 of the regions, said beams are simultaneously incident to the photomultiplier tube 2 at the center thereof and four photomultiplier tubes 2 adjacent thereto. Therefore, by detecting the adjacent photomultiplier tubes 2, the position of the scintillator 1 generating the emission of beam in the row direction can be discriminated. Since the ratio of the incident beams is different by the inclination of a region boundary line, the position of the scintillator 1 in the line direction can be discriminated on the basis of the output ratio of the photomultipliers 2. As mentioned above, many scintillators can be discriminated by a reduced number of the photomultiplier tubes, manufacturing cost is lowered and spatial resolving power is enhanced.
