Abstract
PURPOSE:To detect a gap quantity with constantly high accuracy, by providing a variable resistor the resistance of which is varied according to the movement of a carriage shaft by a gap-adjusting mechanism, and detecting the gap quantity based on the variation in the resistance of the variable resistor. CONSTITUTION:A copy control lever 29 is operated according to paper thickness (the number of copies), thereby adjusting the gap between the tip of a printing head 21 and a platen 24. The lever 29 is provided with a scale plate indicative of the number of copies. A carriage shaft 23 is rotated by a predetermined angle in conjunction with the movement of the lever 29, and is brought into a parallel movement by a predetermined amount in the front-back direction of the platen 24, thereby providing a gap according to the paper thickness. The resistance of a variable resistor 31 provided at an end part of the shaft 23 is varied according to the rotating quantity of the shaft 23, and a signal based on the variation in the resistance is inputted to a CPU, whereby the gap quantity is detected, and printing is started after the adjustment of the scanning speed of a carriage 22 or the like. Since the gap quantity is thus detected through the resistance of the variable resistor 31 which is varied according to the movement of the carriage shaft 31, the gap can be detected with constantly high accuracy.
