Abstract

PURPOSE:To shorten the time for processing a prepd. hole and to prevent the degradation in product quality by injecting a low-pressure assist gas to a work at the start of piercing and increasing the assist gas gradually on progression of processing, thereby piercing the work. CONSTITUTION:A pressure regulating mechanism 8 which controls the pressure of the assist gas so as to increase the pressure gradually is provided between a nozzle 1 which projects a laser beam to the cutting point of the work 3 while injecting the assist gas toward the work and an assist gas supplying source 4. The assist gas of the low pressure is injected from the nozzle 1 to the work 3 at the start of the piercing and the pressure of the assist gas is gradually increased on progression of the piercing so that the abrupt oxygen melting at the start of the piercing is prevented and the splashing of dross, the damaging of a lens and the operator's danger are eliminated. The pressure of the assist gas is increased on progression of the piercing, by which the piercing time is shortened and the degradation in quality by the formation of the excessively large prepd. hole is prevented.
