Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:2,2,4-Trimethyl-1-phenyl-3-pentanol. USE:Useful as a component for perfume composition, having a woody or grapefruit-like fragrance, being blended with any of other various perfume bases and widely usable for perfume, soap, shampoo, rinse, detergent and cosmetic requiring fragrance. PREPARATION:For example, carbonyl group of 2,2,4-trimethyl-1-phenyl-3- pentanone is reduced to give the aimed novel compound. The reduction is carried out by hydrogenating reaction using a metallic catalyst such as a metal hydride, e.g. lithium aluminum hydride or Cu-Cr catalyst. The starting raw material is synthesized by reacting a benzyl halide with diisopropyl ketone in the presence of a base.
