Abstract

PURPOSE:To quickly and automatically set the illuminating condition, by calculating an optimum threshold level by binarizing an image obtained by an image pickup means, and controlling the illuminating power so that said value is positioned in the vicinity of the center of a dynamic range of brightness. CONSTITUTION:An image pickup device 2 obtains a multilevel image by bringing an image pickup object 5 to image pickup under the illumination by an illuminator 1, and sends out its video signal to a microcomputer 3. The computer 3 processes the multilevel image obtained by the device 2, calculates a target value of the illuminating power and gives it to a power control unit 4. In this case, the computer 3 calculates the target value of the illuminating power so that an optimum binarization threshold level for binarizing the multilevel image obtained by the device 2 is positioned in the vicinity of the center of a dynamic range of brightness. The unit 4 modulates the illuminating light by PWM (pulse width modulation), PNM (pulse number modulation), PAM (pulse amplitude modulation), AM (amplitude modulation), etc., in order to control said illuminating power.
