Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the title abrasive in the form of fine particles which has excellent filterability and sedimentability and is free from re-coagulation, by burning a starting material, performing wet pulverization, adjusting the pH value of a wet pulverized slurry to a predetermined value, adding a hydrogen carbonate and drying the flocs thus prepd. CONSTITUTION:A cerium chloride-based burning product obtd. by burning a hydrogenation product, a carbonate, an oxalate or the like obtd. from a rare earth chloride or a bastnaesite-based burning product obtd. by burning a bastnaesite ore which is a fluorocarbonate is wet pulverized and wet classified to prepare a wet pulverized slurry of a rare earth abrasive having the target particle size distribution. The pH of this slurry is adjusted to 4-8, and thereafter a hydrogen carbonate, such as NH4HCO3 or NaHCO3, is added to the slurry in an amt. of 0.2-2wt.% (relative to solid contents of the slurry) so as to form flocs having excellent sedimentability. The slurry is allowed to stand still for a predetermined period of time, and then the supernatant is removed or concn. is performed with a thickener etc. The conc. slurry is dried by a spray dryer etc.
