Abstract
PURPOSE:To make it possible to produce a polyolefin in high yields, by polymerizing an olefin by using a catalyst supported by a magnesium halide obtained by a specified method. CONSTITUTION:An etherial solution of a Grignard reagent of formula I (Wherein R<1> is a hydrocarbon group, X<1> is Br or I, X<2> is Cl and L is 0-1) is added to a halohydrocarbon compound (e.g., a compound derived by replacing at least one H atom. of a 1-20C hydrocarbon compound by a halogen atom.) to form a homogeneous solution. A precipitant (e.g., pentane, heptane or toluene) is added to the obtained solution to precipitate a magnesium halide of formula II (wherein X<1> and X<2> are as defined above). An olefin is polymerized by using a catalyst comprising a transition metal catalyst obtained by causing this carrier to support a titanium halide as usual and an organometallic compound of a Group I-III metal. In this way, a polyolefin can be produced in high yields.
