Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the position detection accuracy of the position detection system by registering estimated positions which satisfy specific correlation between the estimated position of a vehicle and a road map and regarding an estimated position corresponding to the correlation coefficient having the least error with a road as a current position. CONSTITUTION:An estimated position calculation part 4 calculates current position data and also calculates a 1st limit error of the current position data to generate a 2nd limit error which is larger than it. When a correlation coefficient evaluation part 6 detects the pressure of a correlation coefficient larger than a specific threshold value, the 1st limit error is employed and when not, the 2nd limit error is employed to detect a curve containing a branch according to distance data from a traveling distance detection part 1 and turning angle data from a traveling direction detection part 2; and the position on the road within the range of the limit error of map data from a road map memory 3 is registered as an estimated position, and all estimated positions are displayed on a display.
