Abstract

PURPOSE:To make exhaust emission control by a catalytic converter performable in an effective manner by controlling a secondary air quantity on the basis of output out of a linear oxygen content sensor. CONSTITUTION:At the time of oxygen sensor feedback by an upstream oxygen sensor 17 installed in a part at the upstream side of a catalytic converter 9, an electronic control unit (ECU) forcibly varies an air-fuel ratio at the required period and amplitude according to the driving state of an engine E. Then, the ECU controls a secondary air quantity out of a secondary air supply device 45 on the basis of output out of a downstream oxygen sensor 18 so as to cause an output level of this downstream oxygen sensor 18 as a linear oxygen content sensor installed in a part at the downstream side of the catalytic converter 9 by this variation to becomes an almost flat waveform withing the level range. Here the ECU is provided with a richness compensating device making a mean air-fuel ratio into richness when secondary air lead-in time will not come to be positive. With this constitution, an oxygen storage effect inherent in the catalytic converter 9 is well utilized and thereby effective emission control is made performable.
