Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the oxygen adding capacity and carbon dioxide removing capacity of a membrane type oxygenator from being lowered by the air block in said oxygenator, by passing blood containing a large amount of air bubbles through the shortcircuit passage connected to the upper part of a blood inflow passage to allow the same to flow in the blood outflow port of the membrane type oxygenator. CONSTITUTION:Blood containing a large amount of air bubbles is separated upwardly in the blood chamber of a heat exchanger 10 to pass through a shortcircuit passage 12 and flows in a blood storage tank 3 without passing through a membrane type oxygenator 1. The blood not passing through the shortcircuit passage 12 enters the membrane type oxygenator 1 from the blood inflow port thereof to be brought into contact with a hollow yarn membrane 18 and flows in the blood storage tank 3 from a blood outflow port 16 while carbon dioxide is removed from the blood and oxygen added thereto. The blood passing through the membrane type oxygenator 1 and the blood flowing in from the shortcircuit passage 12 are brought into contact with a defoaming member 42 to be defoamed and stored in a blood storage part 34. The blood stored in the blood storage tank 3 passes through a blood outflow passage by the pump provided thereto to be returned to a human body.
