Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain snowfall data in a real time by automatically observing the number, size and area of snow flakes fallen per a definite area for a definite time, by opening the automatic opening and closing shutter provided to the ceiling part of a snow collecting chamber for the definite time to collect snow by a snow collecting belt. CONSTITUTION:A snow collecting chamber 12 has an automatic opening and closing shutter 1 covering a snow collecting port 2 and the opening part 7 whose opening area can be freely controlled provided directly under said shutter 1. Then, the shutter 1 is opened for a definite time and taken-in snow is received by a snow collecting belt 9. Subsequently, rotary reels 10, 10' are driven by a drive apparatus 11 and the snow collecting belt 9 is intermittently moved horizontally to move the collected snow to the place directly under the illumination lamp 14 in an observation chamber 17 to pick up the image of the snow by an image pickup apparatus 15. The signal of the image pickup apparatus 15 is sent to an analyser 25 having an image processor 21 and a personal computer 22 to analyze the distribution of the number, size and area of snow flakes fallen per a definite area for a definite time. The snow after observation is removed by a snow removing apparatus 18.
