Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an extract of OUGON (root of Scutellaria baicalensis) having low content of brown-colored material and stable over a long period in shaded and sealed state, by adding water to crude extract of OUGON optionally after treatment with a polyamide polymer or chitosan, etc., and separating the precipitated extract. CONSTITUTION:An OUGON extract having high baicalein content is produced by adding <=1pt. of water to 1pt. of crude extract liquid or OUGON or adding 1-5pts. of water to 1pt. of crude extract liquid prepared by treating the crude OUGON extract with <=0.1% (based on the crude liquid) of a polyamide polymer, polyimide polymer, polyamino acid polymer, chitosan, crosslinked dextran, silica gel or a cellulose derivative and collecting the precipitated extract. The extract has high solubility in alcohols and forms little precipitate of insoluble components when dissolved in alcohol. It can be widely used in the fields of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and foods by its excellent action to capture and remove active oxygen.
