CONSTITUTION:When the DC motor 14 rotates in a clockwise direction CW, the scanner optical system 2 moves forward and when the DC motor 14 rotates in a counterclockwise direction CCW, the scanner optical system 2 moves backward. Further, a rotary encoder 22 as a pulse generating means is coupled directly with the DC motor 14 and this encoder 22 generates two out-of-phase pulse signals corresponding to the rotational quantity and rotating direction of the DC motor 14. Here, when the scanner optical system 2 is controlled to stop at the reference position in the forward moving operation, the motor 14 is given the forward moving operation quantity corresponding to the pulse interval at the time of the reference position passage detection to perform the stop control. Consequently, even if there is variance in reference position passing speed, variance in the stop position of the scanner optical system 2 is reduced and stable copying operation is performed.
