Abstract

PURPOSE:To preferentially occlude hydrogen, to inhibit the formation of hydrogen sulfide and to carry out stable anaerobic treatment by using a hydrogen occluding alloy as carrier granules. CONSTITUTION:Raw water is introduced into a reaction tank 2 from a duct 1 as an upward flow. The tank 2 has pressure resistance and gaseous methane is introduced into the tank 2 from a methane recovery tank 3 by means of a compressor 4 to apply a prescribed pressure to the inside of the tank 2. The raw water gets in contact with biological membranes formed on the surfaces of carrier granules in the tank 2 and org. matter in the raw water is decomposed into acetic acid, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and ammonia by the action of acid forming bacteria. The acetic acid is further decomposed into methane by the action of methane bacteria on the biological membranes and the hydrogen is occluded in a hydrogen occluding alloy as the carrier. The upper part of the tank 2 is a part for separating the carrier from treated water and the treated water is discharged from a duct 6. The occluded hydrogen is released by reducing the internal pressure of the tank 2 to nearly atmospheric pressure and the released hydrogen is recovered in a hydrogen recovery tank 5.
