Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable production of a calcined article suitable as a carrier or a catalyst, having large surface area, excellent heat resistance and excellent strength after molding, by adding silicic acid fine particles to titanium sulfate and thermally hydrolyzing. CONSTITUTION:Silicic acid fine powder having extremely high specific surface area, known as white carbon of another name, is added to an aqueous solution of titanium sulfate. The mixture is thermally hydrolyzed to form metatitanic acid, which is precipitated together with the silicic acid fine powder. In the operation, the thermal hydrolysis of titanium sulfate is carried out by heating the aqueous solution of titanium sulfate containing the silicic acid fine powder usually to 80 deg.C- the boiling point thereof, preferably to the boiling point and more preferably in the presence of seed crystal to shorten time required. Since metatitanic acid formed by the thermal hydrolysis is gelatinous state, metatitanic acid is partially or wholly made into sol, washed, filtered, dried, calcined at <=about 800 deg.C and pulverized to give a powdery calcined article.
