Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the initialization by a low magnetic field of a overwritable magneto-optical recording medium by forming the initializing a magnetic field of the auxiliary layer of said medium of two components perpendicular and horizontal to the film plane. CONSTITUTION:A recording layer 3 consisting of a thin film and the auxiliary layer 2 are formed on a glass substrate 1. An optical head 4 which outputs laser light 5 for recording is provided. Coils 8 are then provided on both sides of a permanent magnet 6 which generates the magnetic field for initialization so as to sandwich the magnet, then the magnetic field for initialization parallel with the image plane is generated. The inversion torque of magnetic moment is increased by applying this horizontal magnetic field to the medium. The smaller perpendicular magnetic field is, therefore, necessitated; in addition, the magnetic field to generate the magnetization inversion of the auxiliary layer 2 is controlled by controlling the horizontal magnetic field. The miniaturization of the device is thereby enabled.
