Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase the response speed of an optical shutter by impressing the electric field higher than the electric field which maximizes the intensity of the transmitted light from the optical shutter, as an initial electric field, to the optical shutter. CONSTITUTION:The light from a halogen lamp 11 is guided through a heat ray absorbing filter 12 to a light guide 13 from which the light is projected to a rod lens 14. The light projected by this lens 14 is condensed to the point of an optical shutter array 10 and the electric field of a prescribed pulse width is impressed on the optical shutter element at the adequate point in this array 10 so that the light is transmitted therethrough. The electric field higher than the electric field to maximizes the intensity of the transmitted light from the optical shutter in the electrostatic characteristic is impressed as the initial electric field on the optical shutter in the beginning of driving. The increase of the intensity of the transmitted light in the optical shutter is thereby extremely accelerated when the optical shutter is driven. The desired intensity of the transmitted light is thus obtd. in an extremely short period of time and the response speed of the optical shutter is increased.
