Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a single crystal of Fe-Si-Al alloy having high strength but no dispersion of magnetic force by prepg. a belt-shaped molten zone in a polycrystalline rod of Fe-Si-Al alloy by irradiating the rod with electron beams, and moving the electron beams slowly along a longitudinal direction of the polycrystalline rod. CONSTITUTION:A polycrystalline rod 5, of Fe-Si-Al alloy is produced by melting starting materials of Fe, Si, and Al in nonoxidizing atmosphere. The polycrystalline rod 5 is then set in an electron beam floating zone purifying apparatus, and fixed with a lower chuck 6 and an upper chuck 7. The apparatus is then evacuated to high degree of vacuum with an evacuating means 14, and a belt-shaped molten zone 16 is formed by irradiating the polycrystalline rod 5 with electron beams 15 generated by an electron gun 8. The electron beams 15 are moved slowly in a longitudinal direction of the polycrystalline rod 5, thus a single crystal 17 of Fe-Si-Al alloy is grown. The single crystal is used preferably for a material of magnetic head.
