Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent a discharge voltage from being significantly elevated even if an oscillation efficiency and/or a transmission efficiency are significantly degraded and protect a laser oscillation part and/or a transmission means from damage caused by overheating. CONSTITUTION:A laser beam output detecting mechanism 13 is provided after the final stage of a transmission means guiding a laser beam 8 to a work 12. If the ratio between the detected laser beam output 18 and a discharge voltage 20 is within a certain limit, the discharge voltage is controlled to maintain the laser beam output applied to the work at a required value and, if the ratio exceeds the certain limit, the supply of the discharge voltage is discontinued to stop the laser beam oscillation (19 and 21). With this constitution, even if a transmission system and so forth are significantly deteriorated, the laser oscillation part and/or the transmission means are protected from damage caused by heat created by the abnormal increase of the laser beam output.
