Abstract

PURPOSE:To recover an alkali by a single process and to efficiently extract hemicellulose from bagasse by a continuous process, by dialyzing a hemicellulose extracted solution obtained by alkali extraction by using a high polymer membrane of polyvinyl alcohol type. CONSTITUTION:Bagasse (refuse obtained after pressing sugar juice from sugar cane) is immersed in an aqueous solution of an alkali (preferably 0.5-15.0% aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide) usually at 20-50 deg.C for 8-24hr, hemicellulose contained in the bagasse is extracted and the prepared hemicellulose extracted solution is dialyzed by using a high polymer membrane (preferably hollow fiber type) of polyvinyl alcohol type to extract hemicellulose. Hemicellulose has inhibitory action on rise of cholesterol and is useful as a drug and a healthy food.
