Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled sialic acid useful as a synthetic raw material for sugar chain of glycoprotein, etc., in high efficiency at a low cost, by hydrolyzing a milky substance containing sialic acid and desalting and purifying the hydrolyzed liquid by electrodialysis. CONSTITUTION:Sialic acid is isolated from a milky substance containing sialic acid by hydrolysis. The hydrolyzed liquid containing sialic acid is desalted by electrodialysis and then purified again by electrodialysis to obtain the objective sialic acid. The pH of the milky substance is preferably lowered before hydrolysis by the addition of an acid to the substance in an amount of 0.01-1.0N or by passing the substance through a cation exchange polymer and the substance is hydrolyzed preferably by heating at 80-100 deg.C for 15-120min.
