Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a carrier capable of remarkably improving lytic efficiency of bacteria without damaging useful microorganisms and causing pollution, by immobilizing bacteriophages capable of infecting bacteria, lysing the bacterial cells for propagation in a molded product of chitosan in a high concentration. CONSTITUTION:The titled molded product obtained by converting chitosan which is naturally occurring polysaccharides into an acidic solution, forming the solution into the shape of grain, fiber, film, etc., in a coagulation bath consisting of a basic solution and dipping the formed chitosan in a solution containing bacteriophages for 1-4hr while shaking. The resultant molded product is used for the purpose of preventing marine microorganisms from attaching to equipment contacting or utilizing seawater and sterilizing efficiency is higher than that in a method for mixing a bacteriophage solution with seawater and circulating the mixed seawater through the equipment without adversely affecting the surrounding ecosystems.
