Abstract

PURPOSE:To utilize a change in optical constant by projection of light pulses and to speed up information recording by providing a recording layer consisting of Mn and Ge on a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The recording layer provided on the substrate is formed of the two elements; Mn and Ge. The atomic number ratios of the Mn and Te are limited to 40:60-85:15 ranges. The recording layer is easily changed in reflectivity by the laser irradiation of a short pulse width if the Mn and Ge are incorporated into the recording layer and the range of the content of the Mn is limited. High-speed recording of information is thereby enabled and the reproduction is possible as well. In addition, the once recorded information is erased and the fresh information is recordable when the light pulses of the power lower than the power of the light pulses used for the recording are projected to the recording layer.
