Abstract

PURPOSE:To record and erase data at a high speed, by using an optical disk, wherein an alloy membrane consisting of antimony (Sb), tellurium (Te), germanium (Ge) and indium is provided to a substrate, as a recording carrier and recording data on said carrier by activating beam and erasing the same by different activating beam. CONSTITUTION:An optical disk constituted by providing an alloy membrane consisting of Sb, Te, Ge and In on a substrate is used as a recording carrier and data is recorded by activated beam and, after use, said data is erased by activated beam having different energy intensity and this operation is performed repeatedly. The alloy membrane provided on the substrate consists of Sb, Te, Ge and In and, when the composition thereof is represented by general formula (1), one wherein (x) is 0.05-0.4, (y) is 0.5-0.8 and (z) is 0.1-0.4 is pref. from the aspect of the repetition possible number of times of recording and erasure. Laser beam having relatively high intensity is allowed to irradiate the recording carrier in a pulse like manner and pits of an amorphous state are formed to record data while laser beam having relatively weak intensity is allowed to continuously irradiate and the amorphous state is crystallized to erase the data.
