Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound in high selectivity and purity from an inexpensive raw material in one step with extremely little production of by-product, by reacting anilines with 1,2-glycols in liquid phase in the presence of a solid acid catalyst, a metallic catalyst or activated carbon. CONSTITUTION:Indole or an indole derivative can be produced by reacting anilines (e.g. aniline) with 1,2-glycols (e.g. ethylene glycol) in the presence of a solid acid catalyst [selected from (1) a catalyst composed of oxide or hydroxide of Si, Al, B, Sb, Bi, Ag, Cd, etc., and lanthanide element, (2) a catalyst composed of sulfide or selenide of Pd, Pt, Cr, Co, W, etc., and (3) a catalyst composed of an inorganic salt of Fe, Tl, Ni, Mg, etc.], a metallic catalyst (a catalyst composed of element such as Cu, Ag or Pt) or activated carbon preferably at 100-500 deg.C.
