Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a (poly)ether ketone or sulfone, by reacting an aromatic halide having ketone group or sulfone group with an alkali metal (bi)carbonate, stannate, etc. under heating in the presence of silica, alumina, etc., as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic (poly)ether ketone or sulfone having an ether group of formula II (e.g. 4,4'-dibenzoyldiphenyl ether) is produced by reacting (A) a compound having a group of formula I (Y is ketone group or sulfone group; Ar is phenylene; X is F, Br or I which is bonded to o- or p-position relative to Y) (e.g. 4-fluorobenzophenone) with (B) an alkali metal (bi)carbonate, stannate, phosphate, etc. (e.g. K2CO3) in the presence of (C) silica, alumina, titania or silica alumina as a catalyst at 150-400 deg.C. The process produces little by-product since unstable phenol is not used in the process. The produced compound is useful as a raw material for heat-resistant polymer, a photo- sensitizer, a raw material for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals, a solvent, a thermal medium, etc.
