Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the influence caused by cardiac sound of a living body or outer noise over an apparatus for monitoring a respiration rate so as to improve the detection precision of the apparatus, by detecting a respiration rate based on a second output signal in response to only respiratory sound. CONSTITUTION:An output signal from a respiratory sound sensor 12 is amplified by an amplifier 14 and is digitized by an A/D converter 18. The output signal of the A/D converter 18, from which the cardiac sound component is eliminated by a band-pass filter 24, is then damped by an attenuation module 26 to obtain a waveform 27. The square root sum of the waveform 27 within a time length of a movable window 28 is calculated to obtain an energy signal y(n), and the mean value y'(n) of the signal y(n) is then calculated at a smoothing filter 30. The energy signal y'(n) is converted to an alternating-current signal y''(n) having a waveform 35 by a direct-current component elimination module 34. In the waveform 35, a series of marks representing the generation of inspiration and expiration are determined by a band zero-crossing detector 38. The respira tion rate is computed from a time period for generating the marks by an arith metic unit 42 and is then displayed by a display 44.
